Why Kargil Vijay Diwas is Celebrated?
In 2023, India is scheduled to celebrate the 24th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas. This particular day is commonly known as the Kargil War or the Kargil Conflict. On this date in 1999, Indian military personnel engaged in battle with Pakistani militants who had illegally entered Indian Territory over the Line of Control (LOC). The Kargil War actually took place between India and Pakistan in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir, namely along the Line of Control (LoC). During this conflict, the Indian Army successfully regained control over strategic locations, including ‘Tiger Hill,’ and evacuated Pakistani soldiers as part of their military operation known as ‘Operation Vijay.’
How this day is celebrated?
Kargil Vijay Diwas is commemorated nationwide. Annually, the Prime Minister of India is recognised for offering tribute to the martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti, situated at the India Gate. A Kargil War memorial is also situated in Dras, located at the base of Tololing Hill. The structure was constructed by the Indian Army with the purpose of honouring the ones who died during the time of war. The memorial entrance is adorned with a poem titled ‘Pushp Kii Abhilasha’ and the names of the soldiers are prominently etched on the Memorial Wall.
Little History behind this Day
Pakistan initially took control of numerous key locations. However, during the war’s second phase, India captured key transit lines and pinpointed invading entry spots with the help of local shepherds. Finally, in the last week of July, the Indian army, aided by the Indian Air Force, won the war. On July 26, 1999, the Indian military announced they had successfully repelled an invading Pakistani force. The triumph was achieved, but at a heavy price.
The official death toll on the Indian side was 527, while the death toll on the Pakistani side was between 357 and 453. Captain Vikram Batra, one of India’s valiant soldiers, was killed during the Kargil conflict. Kargil Vijay Diwas honours Kargil’s superheroes. After his death, he was conferred the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest honour for bravery. Recently, a film titled Shershaah based on the life of Vikram Batra was also released.
