Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin announced a relief package in the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, providing six thousand rupees in cash assistance to those impacted by the cyclone. The financial aid will be distributed in cash at Public Distribution System outlets in residential neighborhoods.
The announcement followed a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Stalin, where damage caused by floods and relief measures were extensively reviewed. The package includes increased compensation for flood-hit crops and enhanced solatium for kin of those who lost their lives in rain-related incidents due to the cyclone.
Compensation for rain-hit crops exceeding 33%, including paddy, increased from thirteen thousand five hundred rupees to seventeen thousand rupees per hectare. For perennial crops and trees, compensation per hectare rose to twenty-two thousand five hundred rupees from eighteen thousand rupees, and for rain-fed crops, it increased to eight thousand five hundred rupees from seven thousand four hundred ten rupees per hectare.
Solatium for families who lost their lives due to the cyclone rose to five lakh rupees from four lakh rupees. Assistance for damaged boats and fishing nets, including a maximum subsidy for fully damaged mechanized boats, increased to seven lakh fifty thousand rupees from five lakh rupees.
Compensation for the loss of cattle, including cows and bulls, rose to thirty-seven thousand five hundred rupees from thirty thousand rupees. Breeds like ‘Velladu’ and ‘Semmariadu’ saw compensation rise to four thousand rupees from three thousand rupees. Aid for damaged huts increased to eight thousand rupees from five thousand rupees.
Government data revealed forty-seven lakh food packets distributed in Chennai district alone by December 8, with a total of fifty-one lakh packets across districts. Over fifty-eight thousand kg of milk powder, nearly ten lakh drinking water bottles, bread, and biscuit packets were also distributed.
The relief announcement came amid criticism from the opposition and public dissatisfaction over the handling of heavy rains and floods. Stalin defended the government, attributing the prevention of a catastrophe to the completion of stormwater drain work. The state sought five thousand sixty crore rupees in central relief, with the Centre approving two installments of four hundred fifty crore rupees each.
In a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Stalin sought sops for the MSME sector, citing nearly five thousand units coming to a standstill due to damages. The letter requested overdraft facilities and restructuring repayment schedules for the affected MSMEs.
