A new controversy has erupted in Assam regarding the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act. On 23 February, the cabinet of Assam made the decision to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act. This has caused disappointment in the Muslim Community.
Decision against the Muslim Community
The All India United democratic Front(AIUDF) has expressed it’s discontent with the decision of the Assam Cabinet. AIUDF leader Rafiqul Islam criticised the decision by calling it as a move against the Muslims in the state. He alleged that the government of Assam led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma does not have the courage to bring UCC and therefore is trying to cause distress in the Muslim community by repealing the Muslim Marriage Act.
He said “This Government doesn’t have the courage to bring UCC. They can’t do it. What they brought in Uttarakhand, is not UCC either…They were trying to bring UCC to Assam too. But I think they can’t bring it to Assam because there are people from several castes and communities here…BJP followers themselves follow those practices here…Elections are approaching, this is just their tactics to target Muslims.”
Muslim Marriage act, a second option
He further said “They couldn’t bring any Bill on polygamy or UCC in Assam…So, they are repealing the Assam Muslim Marriages & Divorces Registration Act. Assam cabinet doesn’t have the right to repeal or amend a constitutional right.”
