Ancient Beginnings Under the Chaulukya Dynasty
The roots of Ahmedabad date back to the 12th century during the reign of the Chaulukya dynasty. Colonies with ancient origins have shaped the city’s landscape. On February 26, 1411, Ahmed Shah I of Gujarat Sultanate officially established Ahmedabad, declaring it the new capital on March 4, 1411.
Manek Burj: Foundation of Ahmedabad
In 1411, Ahmed Shah laid the foundation of Ahmedabad near Manek Burj, a structure integral to the Bhadra Fort. Manek Burj Garh is dedicated to the 15th-century Hindu saint Maneknath, commemorating his assistance to Ahmed Shah in building Bhadra Fort. The tower, 53 feet high, overlooks Manek Kuva, a well with historical significance.
Ahmedabad’s Role in Indian Independence Movement
Ahmedabad emerged as a hub for scholars and contributors to the country’s service. With Mahatma Gandhi’s arrival in 1915, the city became a focal point for the Indian independence movement. Activists like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who served in the city municipality, played crucial roles in the movement.
Economic and Cultural Hub
Post-independence, Ahmedabad played a significant role in the Bombay state until the formation of Gujarat in 1960. The city, until the establishment of Gandhinagar in 1965, continued as the state’s administrative center. Today, it stands as the seventh-largest city in India, contributing to the cultural and economic fabric of Gujarat.
Modern Developments and Challenges
In May 1989, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation marked Ellis Bridge and its surroundings, Manek Burj, and the Sabarmati River banks as safe areas. A new bridge replaced the original Lokhand bridge in 1999, leading to partial demolition of Manek Burj. After the 2001 Gujarat earthquake and 2002 Gujarat violence, concerns arose about the tower’s stability, leading to its repair and restoration in 2003.
Ancient Temples and Economic Prosperity
Ahmedabad’s rich history includes temples established by the Kaulukya dynasty ruler Karna, such as Kocharaba and Devi Jayanti temples. The city’s economic prosperity in the sixteenth century is highlighted by well-built houses, wide streets, and a thriving economy, boasting skilled craftsmen and artists.
Ahmedabad’s Global Trade Presence
Historical records mention Ahmedabad’s global trade prowess, with artisans known for their work in various materials. The city’s traders were renowned for dealing in diverse products, from sugar-candy and cumin to silk and cotton.
Dynastic Rule and Independence
Throughout its history, Ahmedabad witnessed the rule of various dynasties, from the Chaulukya dynasty to British Company rule. After independence in 1947, Ahmedabad emerged from political rule, paving the way for its present-day status.
