History has been a witness that those who are on the top will have to leave their chair and witness a downfall which is yet again proven by how Patanjali has been on the road to downfall for the past few years.
Founded by Balkrishna and Yog Guru Ramdev, Patanjali has been witnessing the rage of judiciary for taking the legal framework of the country too lightly. Lets know the whole story.
Patanjali and Supreme Court
Patanjali Ayurved Limited company came under legal trouble on February 27, when the Supreme court restricted the company from advertising it’s products on all electronic and print mediums.
The apex court came down heavily on the company for not following the previously passed orders therefore issuing the notice of contempt of court.
The court has issued the contempt of court notice to Patanjali and it’s MD Acharya Balkrishna.
But why was the notice issued?
The notice was issued because in November last year, the Supreme court asked Patanjali to stop running false and misleading advertisements on various mediums. To this, the company gave assurance to not run such advertisements. However, Patanjali’s words did not match it’s actions as the company continued advertisements.
False claims and propositions
Indian Medical Association filled a petition against Patanjali for spreading misleading information about allopathy. The petition also claims that Patanjali runs advertisements making false and misleading claims to cure health issues. Apart from that, IMA also claims that Patanjali was responsible for creating hesitation amongst people against Covid-19 vaccine by manipulating then to doubt the vaccine.
IMA claims that Patanjali not only give false claims to cure health problems through it’s medicines but also attacks modern medicine system of allopathy by the spread of misinformation.
IMA filled the petition in August 2022.
Patanjali again gives assurance
While the bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsannudin Amanullah criticised the company for not following previous orders, it also asked the union government for not being responsible enough on the matter. SC said The entire country has been taken for a ride! For two years you wait when the Drugs Act says this is prohibited?”
Justice Ahsannudin Amanullah angrily said that he is going to give strict orders today. SC said “You have the guts to put out these ads after our orders! You are tempting the court!”
Representing Patanjali’s side, Senior advocate Vipin Sanghi assured that the company will follow the orders and will also take care that no casual remarks are passed in the media.
SC has given 3 weeks of time to the company for giving an answer.
Earlier last year, SC order Patanjali t refrain from publishing false advertisement and if caught Patanjali will have to give a fine of 1 crore.
