Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa suggested on March 4 that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) second list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections is expected to be ready by March 6, Wednesday.
First List Announcement
The party announced its first list of 195 candidates on March 2 for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Notable figures included Prime Minister Narendra Modi and 34 Union ministers, among others. However, candidates from Karnataka were notably absent from this initial list.
Anticipation for Second List
Yediyurappa, who is also a BJP Parliamentary Board member, informed reporters that he will be attending a meeting in the national capital on Wednesday to finalize the candidates from Karnataka. He expressed confidence that the second list, including candidates from Karnataka, would be finalized during this meeting. Yediyurappa highlighted that national leaders would make the final decision on the list.
Significance of Karnataka
Karnataka contributes 28 seats to the Lok Sabha, with the BJP securing 25 of these seats in the 2019 elections. Yediyurappa anticipated that the candidates for all these seats would be declared without any delay.
Composition of First List
The first list of candidates announced over the weekend featured candidates from 16 states and two Union Territories, excluding those from Karnataka. It included a diverse mix of candidates, with representation from various demographics, including women, young leaders, and members of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community.
Recalling 2019 Elections
The Lok Sabha elections in 2019 witnessed a significant victory for the BJP, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership leading the party to secure 303 seats out of the 543-member House. The elections were held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, with results declared on May 23.
