Mother’s name mandatory: In a significant move, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, has made a notable change outside his office at the state secretariat in Mumbai. His new nameplate now proudly displays his mother’s name alongside his own and his father’s.

The alteration from ‘Eknath Shinde’ to ‘Eknath Gangubai Sambhaji Shinde’ comes following a recent directive by the state cabinet. This directive makes it compulsory for all individuals born on or after May 1, 2024, to include their mother’s name in all official government documents, such as Aadhaar and PAN cards.

Mandatory to add Mother’s name

The decision to implement this change stems from a proposal put forth by Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare. In line with this decision, Chief Minister Shinde took the initiative to include his mother’s name on his office nameplate, setting an example for others to follow. The CM wants to lead by setting an example.

The Chief Minister’s Office released a statement emphasizing the significance of recognizing the role mothers play in the upbringing of their children. The government believes that just as a father’s name is acknowledged, a mother’s name should also be given equal recognition.

This move towards inclusivity and recognition of mothers’ contributions has been mirrored by other prominent political figures in Maharashtra. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar have also had their office nameplates updated to include their mothers’ names.

Fadnavis’ nameplate now reads ‘Devendra Sarita Gangadharrao Fadnavis’, while Pawar’s reads ‘Ajit Ashatai Anantrao Pawar’. This symbolic gesture aims to underline the importance of acknowledging and honouring mothers in society.
