On Thursday afternoon, Hyderabad, the state capital of Telangana, witnessed a rare celestial phenomenon known as Zero Shadow Day. It happens when the sun is directly overhead and casting no shadows on the earth’s surface.

The cosmic event is caused by the tilt of the Earth’s axis and its rotation around the sun. Because of this tilt, the angle of the sun’s rays varies throughout the year, resulting in a range of shadow lengths and directions.
When there was no shadow from the sun, some Hyderabad residents posted videos and photographs on their social media accounts.

The sun’s rays reach their highest point in the sky, shortening the shadow. That is how vertical object shadows become undetectable, hence the phrase “Zero Shadow.”
“People and any object, all over the world, staying between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn lose their shadows, albeit briefly, twice a year,” says astrophysicist Debiprosad Duari. These two instances are known as zero shadow moments.”
“For people living between +23.5 and -23.5 degrees latitude, the Sun’s declination will be equal to their latitude twice-once during Uttarayan and once during Dakshinayan. On these two days, the Sun will be exactly overhead at noon and will not cast a shadow of an object on the ground,” the Astronomical Society of India noted.

The phenomenon itself lasts only a fraction of a second, but the effect can be visible for up to a minute and a half.
