In a huge breakthrough, Antop Hill police successfully re-arrested an accused in a horrendous rape case who had been on the run for eight years. The offender, named Vijay Gagansingh, 32, had fled to Nepal and was returned to India to face justice.
The offense was committed in 2015, when Gagansingh reportedly enticed and abducted the plaintiff’s young daughter, resulting in her rape. Sections 363, 376, and 406 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and provisions of the POCSO Act were used to file a case against him.

According to the FIR, a 16-year-old girl and 24-year-old Gagansingh met on Antop Hill, a neighboring park, in 2015. They began communicating and eventually developed a romantic relationship, which resulted in Gagansingh reportedly eloping with the victim and raping her at his Antop Hill residence.
In July 2015, the victim’s father reported the event to authorities, which led to Gagansingh’s initial arrest and the victim’s rescue. After four months in jail, he was freed on bond for one week, during which he fled to Nepal.
Despite continued efforts by law enforcement over the years, the accused eluded capture, resulting in the issuing of a perpetual arrest warrant by Sessions Court No.24 in Mumbai, which declared him “absconding.”
The breakthrough was made possible by the Antop Hill police, who started an extensive search operation. Clues led them to Gagansingh’s previous Antop Hill residence, but the house was sold in 2018, leaving the accused’s location unknown.
“We were able to obtain Gagansingh’s family members’ mobile phone numbers, but they were tight-lipped about his current location.” However, a friend of the accused revealed that he lived in Nepal and only visited India on occasion. With this information, we increased our surveillance of Gagansingh’s family and kept a tight eye on them for several months.
The breakthrough came when an undercover informant alerted the police to the fact that the accused was on his way to Mumbai from Dhangadhi, Nepal.
Based on this information, a team from the Antop Hill police station and the crime investigation section apprehended Gagansingh at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. “He was apprehended and detained,” said PSI Shivani Madane.
The offender has been re-arrested and will face his accusations in a court of law.
The complaint was filed in the month of July 2015.
