Injured Transferred to Government Hospital

According to the news, the bodies have been transferred to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, and a rescue operation is ongoing. Authorities believe the fire started when a passenger lit a gas burner to make coffee.

Pilgrims were onboard

A coach stationed here at Madurai railway station caught fire around 5:30 a.m. today. There were pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh on board. When they turned on the gas cooker to make coffee, the gas cylinder exploded. According to Madurai District Collector MS Sangeetha, we have retrieved nine bodies so far, according to PTI.

What officials have to say about the incident

According to B.Guganesan, Chief Public Relations Officer, Southern Railway, the occupants aboard the private party coach illegally smuggled a petrol cylinder, which caused the fire.

The Punalur-Madurai Express connected the coach at Nagercoil Junction on Friday and detached it after arriving in Madurai. This is a private party coach that was connected to train number 16730,Punalur-Madurai Exp at Nagercoil Junction yesterday (Aug 25).
