Many people are believed to be buried beneath the rubble of shops damaged by a massive landslide at Gaurikund on the Kedarnath yatra route in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. The search and rescue effort has been launched by a team from the state disaster reaction force (SDRF).
According to a Rudraprayag disaster management officer, the landslide is expected to bury or wash away 10 to 12 persons.
Three shops are said to have been damaged by a landslide caused by heavy rains near the Gaurikund post bridge last night.
“The operation to find the missing people is ongoing,” said Dr Visakha, SP Rudraprayag.
“We learned that three shops were damaged as a result of falling rocks and severe rain…The search operation was launched right away. It was reported that 10-12 persons were present, however they have yet to be found,” Disaster Management Officer Dalip Singh Rajwar told ANI.
Gaurikund, named after Goddess Parvati, is both a pilgrimage site and the starting point for a trek to Kedarnath Temple.
Due to the threat of rain-related incidents, the number of pilgrims visiting the Kedarnath shrine has decreased throughout the monsoon season.
