Conflict between Student Groups
The situation originated from a dispute between students belonging to different sections of the Boys Hostel, located at the rear side of Gujarat University. A group of individuals, identified as anti-social elements, arrived at the hostel and proceeded to vandalize students’ bikes while also engaging in stone pelting within the hostel.
Video Evidence Emerges
During the chaos, a student managed to capture the entire incident on video. The footage reveals one person damaging a bike with a stick and another pelting stones inside the hostel. Upon receiving reports of the turmoil, Gujarat First team visited the hostel to investigate further, confirming the altercation between student groups.
Reasons Behind the Conflict
Sources indicate that the conflict stemmed from a disagreement regarding four students, hailing from South Africa, Uzbekistan, and Sri Lanka, who were reportedly offering Namaz (Islamic prayers) in their hostel rooms. This action sparked protests and religious slogans, ultimately leading to a physical altercation between the two student groups.
Police Intervention and Government Response
The escalating situation prompted police intervention, with authorities swiftly arriving at the hostel to restore order. Notably, a video circulated depicting individuals pelting stones from outside the hostel premises. In response, Minister of State for Home Affairs Harsh Sanghvi convened a meeting to address the incident, instructing DG and CP to take immediate action following the attack on students.
