Bengaluru Water Crisis: The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is launching an extensive drive today to install tap aerators across various establishments in the city. This move aims to address the critical water scarcity gripping Bengaluru, with a focus on conserving water resources amidst dwindling reserves.
Background
The initiative follows the BWSSB’s recent mandate enforcing the use of aerators in taps utilized by bulk consumers within the tech hub. This directive aligns with a series of measures imposed by the agency, including restrictions on water usage for recreational activities during upcoming festivals like Holi.
Purpose of Tap Aerators
Tap aerators are devices designed to regulate water flow from taps by attaching to their openings. V. Ram Prasath Manohar, Chairman of BWSSB, emphasized the significance of aerators, highlighting their potential to save between 60 to 85 percent of water usage.

Installation Drive
Commencing from today, authorities will embark on installing aerators in buildings, commercial spaces, restaurants, luxury hotels, and industries across Bengaluru. The initial phase spans a voluntary 10-day window, during which establishments are encouraged to adopt aerators voluntarily. After this period, non-compliant buildings will be subject to mandatory installation.
Water Scarcity Challenges
Bengaluru and the broader Karnataka area are facing a severe lack of water, made worse by the drying up of around 6,900 borewells across the city.
This problem has been worsened by inadequate rainfall during the recent monsoon, resulting in a significant shortfall in water resources even before summer begins.
