BJP and BJD Alliance: Bhartiya Janata Party and Biju Janta Dal in Odisha are reportedly in talks for a possible alliance in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in state. If BJD and BJP get together in alliance then BJD will join NDA.

Naveen Patnaik led BJD is reportedly in talks with BJP for the seat sharing formula. Naveen Patnaik, the chief minister of Odisha has a strong hold on the state and the popularity of the party is more than BJP. Naveen Patnaik’s party has had a fairly good image in the state.

Alliance after 15 years ?

Even as their has been no formal announcement about the alliance, the leaders of both the parties have hinted towards the possibility. according to media reports, BJD is ready to agree to give 8 Lok Sabha seats to BJP while keeping 13  for itself out of 21 seats, while BJP aims for 9 seats.

Top leadership of BJD held extensive meeting at the residence of CM, Naveen Niwas in the state’s capital. BJP leaders along with Amit Shah and JP Nadda also held talks in New Delhi discussing the alliance possibility amongst other maters of elections.

Leaders from both the parties have hinted at alliance talks between BJP and BJD.

BJP and BJD relations over the past years

Bhartiya Janata Party and Biju Janta Dal were once in close alliance till 2009, but after 2009, BJD decided not to stay connected with BJP and compromise over it’s image after the Kandhamal Riots. The alliance between BJP and BJD broke after a partnership of 11 years.

The current relations

BJD has been supportive of BP in the parliament over the past 2 terms of the Modi government. Both BJP and BJD stay away from saying harsh things about the other and criticise the other regularly. Prime Minister Modi and Naveen Patnaik has also have nice relations. PM have been vocal for his support to Odisha and both the leaders have also been in contact during times of Natural disaster such as cyclone.

PM Modi was in Odisha recently on March 5, for launching several developmental projects worth Rs 19,600. During the launch event, both PM and the CM praised each other. PM Modi also paid homage to the ex-Chief Minister of Odisha, Biju Patnaik, on his birth anniversary praising the former CM for his contribution.
