In a shocking turn of events, the Congress party has labeled the recent killing of Nafe Singh Rathee, the Haryana unit president of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), as the state’s “first political murder.” Demanding a thorough investigation into the incident, the Congress has called for either a probe by a high court judge or a high court judge-monitored CBI investigation.

Congress Demands Justice

Senior Congress leader Raghuvir Singh Kadian emphasized that Rathee’s demise was not a result of natural causes. In a session at the Haryana Assembly, Kadian asserted, “It is a political murder and the first such incident in Haryana after it was carved out as a separate state (in 1966).” The Congress leader urged for the swift arrest of those responsible for Rathee’s killing, demanding exemplary punishment.

Tributes in Assembly as Demands for Justice Grow

The Haryana Assembly, at the outset of its proceedings, paid homage to the late former Lok Sabha speaker Manohar Joshi. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar led the Assembly in paying respects to Rathee. Kadian, during his homage, highlighted Rathee’s humble background and his journey from a farmer’s family to becoming an MLA after overcoming significant life struggles.

Demand for CBI investigation on Rathee’s death

Kadian insisted on a thorough investigation, stating, “Either a probe by a high court judge or a high court judge-monitored CBI probe should be held into the incident.” He shared a personal connection with Rathee, hailing from the same district, Jhajjar, and highlighted the late INLD leader’s passion for wrestling and other sports.

Rathee, traveling in a sports utility vehicle (SUV) on Sunday, fell victim to assailants who attacked him in Jhajjar’s Bahadurgarh town, near Delhi. The unidentified attackers sprayed the SUV with bullets, resulting in the deaths of Rathee and an INLD worker. With less than two months remaining for the Lok Sabha polls, opposition parties voiced concerns over a perceived breakdown in law and order in Haryana, ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

CM Khattar promises strict action

Chief Minister Khattar assured that every culprit involved in the case would be brought to justice, instructing the police to apprehend the accused promptly and take the strictest action. Senior INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala accused the BJP-led government of failing to provide adequate security to Rathee, despite known threats to his life, and echoed the demand for a CBI probe. Both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) criticized the Khattar government over the incident, heightening the pressure for a comprehensive investigation.
