Thousands of people were evacuated from storm-swollen rivers in China’s northeast on Friday, while districts on Beijing’s outskirts removed debris from flooding that damaged roads, knocked out power, and left neighborhoods in disarray.

China is dealing with record-breaking rains in some parts, while others are dealing with blazing summer heat and crop-threatening dryness. At least 22 people were killed in flooding this week near Beijing and in the neighboring Hebei province.

Xie Xin, a resident of Beijing’s western outskirts, claimed the floodwaters rose so quickly that his family’s house was swamped in less than 10 minutes.

According to the official Xinhua News Agency, 54,000 people were forced to flee their homes in the northeast surrounding Harbin, the largest city in Heilongjiang province. It was reported that 81 boats carrying rescue workers were evacuating citizens.

Rains that began last weekend flooded drainage systems. Classes have been suspended in Beijing, China’s city of more than 20 million people. Power was knocked out in some regions.

Flood waters were diverted to nearby areas to safeguard Beijing, sparking concerns on social media Friday that the destruction could have been lessened if more water had been channeled through the capital’s rivers and canals.

Residents in Mentougou, a district of more than 260,000 people in Beijing’s western suburbs, were cleaning mud from their homes on Friday. Around the capital, the district was severely impacted.

Li Mingmei, a resident of the district’s Nanxinfang Village, claimed the floodwaters nearly reached her head.

“People in our village were washed away,” Li, 45, explained. “We were extremely fortunate to be alive at all.” What about those who did not survive?”

According to the Beijing Meteorological Bureau, the city received 744.8 millimeters (29.3 inches) of rain between Saturday and Wednesday morning.
