Inauguration and Commencement

The underwater metro service commenced its operations with a grand inauguration ceremony, marking a significant milestone in Kolkata’s transportation history. The first train departed from Howrah Maidan station on the East-West metro corridor, while another train simultaneously departed from Esplanade station, both journeys garnering much excitement and attention.

Engineering Marvel

The underwater metro section spans across the Hooghly River, with a tunnel length of 520 meters. This engineering marvel showcases India’s prowess in infrastructure development, earning applause and pride from passengers who cheered with ‘Vande Bharat’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ slogans during the ride.

Passenger Reactions

Passengers expressed their joy and gratitude, with one holding a placard thanking Prime Minister Modi for the achievement. Another passenger shared their excitement, mentioning the ease of ticketing and the thrill of traveling in India’s first underwater metro train.

Operational Details

The underwater metro is adorned with blue LED lights, adding to the ambiance of the river-themed journey. Operating on weekdays with a frequency of every 12 to 15 minutes, the last metro of the day departs at 9:45 pm in both directions, ensuring convenient commuting options for residents and visitors alike.

PM Modi’s Involvement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a significant role in inaugurating the Kolkata metro operations on March 6. He also took a memorable metro ride with school students, engaging in conversations and appreciating the efforts of the metro staff.

Expansion and Connectivity Projects

Apart from the underwater metro, PM Modi inaugurated other key metro sections, including the Kavi Subhash – Hemanta Mukhopadhyay Metro section and the Taratala – Majerhat Metro section. These additions signify a comprehensive approach towards enhancing urban mobility and connectivity in Kolkata.
