According to the most recent data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, summer crop coverage in India decreased slightly, reaching 830.31 lakh hectares as of 28 July. This is a decline from the same time period last year, when the cultivated area was 831.65 million hectares.
According to the data, rice cultivation increased significantly, with 237.58 lakh hectares planted this year compared to 233.25 lakh hectares during the same time period in 2022.
In contrast, the category of pulse cereals saw a decline in total cultivated area. This year, legumes were planted on 96.84 lakh hectares, compared to 109.15 lakh hectares last year.
The area planted for the pulses subcategories Arhar, Urad bean, Moong bean, Kulthi, and other pulses decreased in comparison to the previous year’s figures.
This year, the cultivation area for Shri Anna-cum-coarse cereals increased to 145.76 lakh hectares from 143.48 lakh hectare last year. However, the trends for this category, which includes jowar, bajra, ragi, small millets, and maize, were mixed, with some exhibiting an increase and others a decrease in cropland.
This year, a total of 171.02 lakh hectares were devoted to oilseed cultivation, up from 167.61 lakh hectares during the same period in 2022. While groundnut and soybean plantings increased, sunflower, sesamum, niger, and other oilseeds saw a decrease in area.
Sugarcane and jute & mesta cultivation also increased, with 56.00 lakh hectares and 6.37 lakh hectares respectively under cultivation. However, the area sown for cotton decreased slightly from the previous year, standing at 116.75 lakh hectare as opposed to 117.91 lakh hectare.
Overall, 830.31 lakh hectares will be planted with summer cereals in 2023, which is only marginally less than the 831.65 lakh hectares planted during the same period in 2022.
