Today, the heated debate between the ruling party and the opposition on the no-confidence motion is coming to a close, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will respond to the motion in the Lok Sabha. He will probably talk to the House today after 4 p.m.

The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A.) filed the no-confidence motion in opposition to the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. This set up a fight in parliament over the violence in Manipur and other pressing issues.
Both sides have been engaged in a high-stakes verbal fight for the past two days. The Opposition said that the Centre was dividing Manipur, but the ruling alliance defended itself by pointing out the government’s work to help people.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi started the debate by saying that the I.N.D.I.A. group was compelled to file the no-confidence motion in opposition to the government in order to break Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s’maun vrat’ (vow of silence) on the violence in Manipur. He also said that a government that talks about “one India” has made “two Manipurs”—one that lives in the hills and the other that lives in the valley.
The Union’s interior minister, Amit Shah, criticised the Opposition for generating “confusion” by introducing the motion of no confidence. A vote of no confidence serves no purpose other than to spread chaos. They favor nobody: not farmers, and not the poor. They are only concerned about their immediate family, he said.
The Union’s defence minister, Rajnath Singh, has affirmed that Prime Minister Modi will be in the Lok Sabha today.
The central government had previously resolved to discuss the Manipur violence issue on August 11, the final day of the monsoon session.
Even if there is a vote at the conclusion of the debate, the BJP-led NDA government will suffer little damage. It has 331 members in the Lower House, with 303 of them belonging to the BJP alone – well above the majority threshold of 272.
In contrast, the I.N.D.I.A. alliance now has 144 MPs and, with BRS’s backing, could increase that to 152. Naveen Patnaik’s BJD, which has 70 seats in parliament, has not yet signed on in support of the motion.
The Opposition has justified their motion, although knowing the odds are against them, by saying it will help them win the “battle of perception” by forcing PM Modi to address the Manipur issue.
