Nayab Singh Saini has taken the oath as the new Chief Minister of Haryana, succeeding Manohar Lal Khattar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his congratulations to Saini and his ministerial team for their dedication to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Haryana.

Political Shifts in Haryana: Khattar Steps Down

The change in leadership comes in the wake of a breakdown in the ruling BJP-JJP alliance over unsuccessful seat-sharing talks for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. Manohar Lal Khattar, along with his ministers, stepped down from their positions, leading to the reshuffling of political dynamics in the state.

Alongside Nayab Singh Saini, key members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including JP Dalal, Moolchand Sharma, Banwari Lal, and Kanwar Pal Gurjar, all from the previous cabinet, took their oaths as ministers during the swearing-in ceremony.

Symbolic Gesture: Saini bends to touch Khattar’s feet

In a symbolic gesture of respect and camaraderie, Nayab Singh Saini, considered a confidante of Khattar, bent down to touch the outgoing Chief Minister’s feet twice during the ceremony. The two leaders shared a warm hug, emphasizing the continuity and collaboration within the party.

Saini’s political background

Nayab Singh Saini, an influential figure within the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community, is the BJP’s Lok Sabha MP from Kurukshetra. He was appointed as the state president of the Haryana BJP in October last year. Saini, known for his close association with Khattar, won the Kurukshetra constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections with a significant margin.

Political landscape and majority support

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured victory in all 10 parliamentary seats, while the JJP, in alliance with AAP, faced challenges on seven contested seats. With 41 MLAs in the 90-member House, the BJP has gathered additional support from six independent MLAs and Haryana Lokhit Party MLA Gopal Kanda, solidifying its position in the state. The majority mark in the House is set at 46 seats.
