Data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) of the National Sample Survey Office showed that, from July to September 2023, Himachal Pradesh had the highest rate of urban unemployment (33.9%), followed by Rajasthan (30.20%) for the 15 to 29 year age group.
This was in contrast to the national average of 17.3% for the same age group during the same period, PTI reported.
According to the PLFS data, Himachal Pradesh’s urban female unemployment rate for those aged 15 to 29 was 49.2% during the July–September quarter of this fiscal year, while the state’s male unemployment rate was 25.3%.
The PLFS data showed that Rajasthan had 39.4% of urban female unemployment during the quarter, compared to 27.2% of male unemployment.
A high urban unemployment rate of 29.8% in the age group was also reported for Jammu & Kashmir. During the quarter, female unemployment was high at 51.8%, while male unemployment was lower at 19.8% during the July-September quarter.
According to the current weekly status (CWS), 17.3% of the country’s urban unemployed were in the 15–29 age groups.
The last seven days leading up to the survey date serve as the reference period for determining the Current Weekly Status.
According to PLFS data, the national average urban unemployment rate for people in the 15–29 age group was 22.9% in the July–September quarter of 2023, compared to 15.5% for women in the same age group.

22 states participated in the NSSO survey. According to the survey, Gujarat had the lowest unemployment rate among people aged 15 to 29 in the July–September quarter, at 7.1%. Delhi came in second, with 8.4%.
