The much awaited report of Law Commission on ‘One Nation and One Elections’ is expected to be submitted soon. Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the country, the Law Commission is expected to submit it’s report by the end of this week stirring conversations about the topic.

 One Nation and One election

The current union Government intends to bring up the provision of One Nation and One Election. Under this provision all elections in the country will be held simultaneously at once or within a short period of time. The Lok Sabha elections, Vidhan Sabha Elections, Municipality elections and Panchayat will all be held at once.  The Law Commission will be submitting a report on the pros and cons of this.

The current regime wants to bring One Nation One Election so that all the time which is consumed every year to conduct one or the other level of election can be saved. The work and energy of Election Commission and the political parties can also be saved by this. Governments and elected representatives can actually focus on working and performing their duties continuously without getting distracted by other level of elections.

Adding a constitutional chapter

The commission is likely to suggest adding a chapter in the constitution on One Nation One Election. The panel will also recommend how to go about synchronise the elections in state assemblies. It will suggest synchronising legislative assembly election in three phases. If this provision is accepted, simultaneous elections can be held in 2029 during the next scheduled Lok Sabha Elections.

What if a government falls?

In case a no -confidence motion is passed crippling the government, the commission will suggest forming a unity government comprising representatives of various parties. If that doesn’t work as well, the commission will recommend going ahead with re-elections and forming government for the remaining period of term so that the flow is maintained.
