In a significant move on International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared a reduction of ₹100 in the price of cooking gas cylinders for all customers, benefiting approximately 316 million households across the nation. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday morning, Prime Minister Modi expressed this decision as a gift to the nation’s households, particularly emphasizing its impact on women.
Government’s Commitment to Ease Financial Burden
Highlighting the rationale behind the decision, Prime Minister Modi stated that the reduction in LPG cylinder prices is aligned with the government’s ‘ease of living’ policy. He emphasized that this initiative aims to alleviate the financial strain on millions of households, ultimately empowering women, a key demographic in Indian society.
Promoting Well-being and Environmental Sustainability
Moreover, the Prime Minister articulated that the affordability of cooking gas will not only enhance the well-being of families but also contribute to a healthier environment. This assertion underscores the multifaceted benefits of the price reduction, which extends beyond economic relief to encompass broader societal and environmental welfare objectives.
Extension of Subsidy under Ujjwala Yojana
The announcement closely follows the government’s decision to extend the subsidy of Rs. 300 per LPG cylinder to impoverished women under the Ujjwala Yojana for the upcoming fiscal year commencing on April 1. This extension underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to prioritize the welfare of economically vulnerable segments of society, particularly women.
Impending Reduction in Cooking Gas Rates
After Prime Minister Modi’s declaration, state-run oil marketing companies have committed to promptly reduce cooking gas rates. An executive from a public sector oil company, speaking on the condition of anonymity, disclosed that they await directives from the oil ministry to implement the reduction. Currently priced at Rs.903 per unit in Delhi, the cost of a 14.2 kg cooking gas cylinder is expected to decrease to Rs.803.
