Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, has stated that his government will investigate the constitutionality of a system that would require parental consent for love marriages.

In response to a demand by some members of the Patidar community that parental consent be required for love marriages, he stated the following.
Mr. Patel, speaking at an event organised on Sunday in Mehsana by the Sardar Patel Group, an organisation representing the Patidar community, stated that state Health Minister Rushikesh Patel instructed him to conduct a study on the instances of girls eloping for marriage in order to create a system where parental consent is required (for marriages).
A member of the opposition Congress stated that he will support such legislation if it is introduced by the government.
Imran Khedawala, a member of the Legislative Assembly, stated, “At a time when parents are disregarded in love marriages, the government is considering creating a constitutionally viable system for love marriages.”
The chief Minister has pledged to commission a study on parental consent requirements for love marriages. The chief minister has addressed this issue. If the government proposes such legislation during the assembly session, he will support it,” he said.
In 2021, the state government amended the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act to penalize forced or fraudulent religious conversion through marriage. A person who is judged guilty may face up to ten years in prison under the amended statute.
