In conversations with
HT, administration officials reviewed Modi’s official visit to the United
States this past week and confirmed that Biden and Modi spoke about China, that
both leaders were “pragmatic” and seek to maintain stability with
China, and that both leaders also desired to deal with China from an approach of
strength.

It is time, they
argued, to follow through on the commitments made in the joint statement, keep
the relationship ambitious, and get ready for more high-level diplomacy,
especially since Vice President Biden will be visiting India ahead of the G20
summit in September.

Campbell told HT that
they wanted the State visit to be “no less than historic” by
arranging a number of events and engagements that will strengthen relationships
between India and the United States.

Campbell was asked
about the goals of the meeting and the results that were expected. He said, that
there was an expectation to establish the connection in, initially all, just
the personal relationship between the two leaders, but then to make clear that
the basis of our relationship consisted of strong and new partnerships within
technology, and collaboration on creative approaches to defence which would endeavor
to provide the nation with cutting edge capabilities that would accomplish
their ambitions to become a great power. This involves recognising the power
and depth of diaspora contacts and providing additional possibilities for
education, he said.
