The central government, on Monday, notified the implementation of CAA 2019 in the country. This move by the home ministry has stirred up the political environment concerning the timing of the decision. Home Minister Amit Shah said that the BJP government has fulfilled the promise it made.
What is CAA?
The Citizenship Amendment Act of 2019 aims to provide citizenship to undocumented migrants who sought refuge in India before December 31, 2014. This will include minority migrants from Muslim-majority countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Citizenship will be granted to Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis if they migrated to India owing to religious persecution in their previous countries.

All India Muslim Jamaat welcomed it
The President of AIMJ, Maulana Shahbuddin Rizvi Bareilvi, has welcomed the Act, reassuring the Muslim community to embrace this law as it does not intend harm against the community. He also said that this act should have been brought sooner as there was no law to provide citizenship to non-Muslims migrating from neighboring countries.
Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee welcomed it
Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has also welcomed the citizenship act, saying that it is a positive step for those Sikhs whose faith was converted in Pakistan and other countries.

Students groups in Assam against it
The Congress-led United Opposition Forum (UOF) along with other 30 student groups and organizations is planning to intensify protests against the Act. All Assam Students Union (AASU) said that they will oppose the implementation of the Act in a democratic manner.
AIMIM called it unconstitutional
The AIMIM spokesperson Waris Pathan said that the Act is unconstitutional, calling the move by the government an act inspired by the ideology of Nathuram Godse aiming to sow division in the nation.

Vijay Thalapathy called it unacceptable
The South Indian superstar Vijay Chandrasekhar, better known as Vijay Thalapathy, has expressed his disagreement with the implementation of the law. He said that such an act will divide the peaceful state of the country and that such an act should not be implemented in Tamil Nadu. Thalapathy entered politics in February forming his own party by the name Tamilaga Vetri Kazham.
Owaisi believes CAA aims to target Muslims
The supremo of All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen protested against the Act, saying that it is inspired by the ideology of Godse who wanted Muslims to be reduced to second-class citizens in the country.
Kejriwal questioned the timing
The Chief Minister of Delhi questioned the timing of the implementation of the act, saying that the government has taken the decision to implement the act just before the elections even after staying in power for the past 10 years, instead of focusing on poverty and unemployment.
